Warning: The following content features graphic content that may be extremely distressing for some.

A five-year-old boy is fighting for his life after being thrown off a third-floor shopping centre balcony by a stranger.

The Sun reports that Landen Hoffmann was left in a pool of blood after plunging to the marble ground floor in front of petrified witnesses at Minnesota's Mall of America.

His panic-stricken mum was heard screaming: "Oh my God, my baby - someone threw him over the edge".

More than $USD377,000 ($AUD526,000) has been raised on the family's GoFundMe page to the boy who is being described as "the sweetest kindest five-year-old you will ever meet".

"His soul is soft and gentle and instantly brings a smile to everybody he meets.

"He is full of energy and life and enjoys soccer, playing with friends and family and playing hockey with his brother and sister."

24-year-old Emmanuel Deshawn Aranda has been charged with attempted murder after being chased down by police following the disturbing incident.

He is not known to Landen - who remains in a critical condition in hospital - or his family.
