100 Jobs Lost As Iconic SA Retailer Shuts Its Doors
Radio Rentals will close its doors for good in coming weeks with 100 South Australian employees set to lose their jobs.
Mix102.3 understands all staff were told the bad news on Tuesday night.
Radio Rentals issued a statement soon after confirming that it planned to “exit its retail and online sales operations in South Australia and close its stores in the next two months”.
It said rental customers of the business would not be affected as the rental part of its business was separately owned.
The statement said all 100 South Australian employees would receive all their superannuation and annual leave entitlements.
“After such a long time in business in South Australia, the decision to close our retail operations was very difficult and emotional,” Radio Rentals Managing Director Nick Palmer said in a statement.
“It was only taken after careful consideration and pursuit of all other strategic options including a sale.
“Given the changing and challenging face of retail business these options regrettably were not viable.”
Radio Rentals currently operates 12 stores in SA - Berri, Colonnades, Elizabeth, Marion, Gepps Cross, Mt Gambier, Munno Para, Murray Bridge, Parabanks, Prospect, West Lakes and Woodville. All are set to close by mid-June.
Radio Rentals intends to sell off all retail stock before the doors close for a final time and honour or refund gift cards.
The head office at Main North Rd, Prospect will remain open to service rentals.
Radio Rentals specialised in televisions, audio visual equipment, phones, computers, furniture, kitchen appliances, laundry and cleaning, air-conditioners, garden tools and exercise equipment.
It first opened in Rundle St in Adelaide in 1958.
