If you were alive, and not comatose during the years 1989 - 1992 you would not been able to escape seeing Acropolis Now. 

At the height of wog comedy, Acropolis Now represented the apex of monobrow and hairy back jokes. It ran for 63 episodes on the Seven Network was created by  Nick Giannopoulos, George Kapiniaris and Simon Palomares, who also starred in the series.

By this time, these three were already well known, at least in Melbourne, for their stage show Wogs Out of Work. 

Although it seems clichéd now, it was the first mainstream comedy dealing with those "New Australians" since the publication of "They're a Weird Mob".   So of course, culture clash is the name of the game and "hilarity" ensues at all times.  

Greek Jim Stephanidis (Giannopoulos), is the immature owner and his best friend, Spaniard Ricky Martinez (Palomares) is the sensible manager. Memo (Kapiniaris) is the traditional Greek waiter, Liz is the liberated Australian waitress. Skip is the naïve new cook from the bush and Manolis is the stubborn cook from the old cafe.

Then of course - there is Effie - Jim's hairdresser cousin. Mary Coustas won the 1993 Logie for Most Popular Comedy Performer for her role as Effie - OK.
