Have you ever noticed that most of the Disney Princesses are always dressed in blue?
I never had either… but now I can’t help but see it… Snow White, Princess Jasmine, Aurora, Elsa, Ariel, Cinderella… the list goes on!
As it turns out, it’s not a coincidence.
The female heroins are dressed in blue in a bid to ‘empower’ young women.
Not dolled up in pink like traditional princesses, blue is the colour of trust, calm and serenity, and it also makes the princesses a little more gender fluid, with Disney sending a very important message with the dresses — that blue isn’t just for boys, and not all princesses have to be pretty in pink.
Blue also inspires confidence; a characteristic many parents want to instil in their children. Designer Christopher Kane told Elle magazine: “When you think of every Disney heroine — Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, Jasmine — they’re all wearing blue! It’s a thing, Disney Blue.”
“You’re adding a bit of power to the character by giving her the blue,” Leatrice Eiseman of the Pantone Color Institute told Allure.
“It’s a very subtle way of saying, ‘Yeah, but young women, young girls, can be empowered, too.’”
It’s also been said that blue is a symbol of positivity and hope. With Eisman saying, “It’s dependable. It’s reliable. It might cloud up, but we know it’s there.”
