Australian musician and comedian Tim Minchin will bring his talent and an upright piano back home with the announcement of a new project to be filmed in South Australia later this year.

Upright stars Minchin as Lucky Flynn, who sets out with his beloved upright piano to drive 4000 kilometres from Sydney to Perth to farewell his dying mother, but becomes entangled with teenager Meg (Milly Alcock) after literally running into her, Foxtel said in a statement on Monday.

Production will begin in South Australia in October, with filming to continue in Western Australia.
