A New South Wales shopping centre has been slammed for chaining up reindeer during a Christmas event.
Grafton Shoppingworld held its Christmas Parade on December 5, with visitors allowed to take photos and pat the animals for around 2 hours.
A photo was posted to a private Facebook group, where users slammed shopping centre.
However, one Instagram user has posted public, a video of the animals arriving.
Several shoppers took to Google to give the shopping centre low reviews, with one saying “Would give no stars if possible. Christmas is a time for being kind and compassionate and this place decides to celebrate Christmas by tying and chaining up an animal to poked and prodded at.”
Grafton Shoppingworld told 7News: “Two reindeer were walked around inside the air-conditioned centre as part of the promotion with a local dance troupe.”
“They were led by their NSW DPI-registered handling team tethered to a sleigh and parents and children had the opportunity to pet the animals under the supervision of their handlers at the conclusion.”
The animals were at the shopping centre for about two hours and were fed and watered by their handlers.
“Grafton Shoppingworld ensured that the handling team complied with centre management protocols and are satisfied with the care provided to the animals during their brief appearance.”
There are no plans for the reindeer to return.
