Iconic South Australian brewery West End is set to close its Thebarton brewery after 160 years of operating in South Australia.

Japanese parent company Lion released a statement saying that the brewery will close in June 2021.

The company has attributed the closure to falling beer consumption and changing tastes in beer.

In the statement, Lion noted that the Thebarton brewery has been operating below capacity for a while.

“This is a sad day for the West End team, Lion and South Australia,” the company notes.

“The Australian beer market has been in long-term decline for the past decade as Australian drinkers choose other beverages, like wine, over beer.”

Those employees affected by the closure will have access to a re-skilling fund as well as redundancy payouts.

Lion has not yet confirmed how many staff members will be affected by the closure.
