Two patients with the COVID-19 virus are currently in intensive care at the Royal Adelaide Hospital, as SA Health’s Dr Nicole Spurrier confirmed that the state has recorded its first case of community transmission of the virus.

A woman in her 50s had returned a positive test result for the virus, with an unknown origin sparking concerns that SA would now be dealing with the virus spreading throughout the community and not just from those who had returned recently from overseas.

Although SA Health has not revealed the details of the patients on privacy grounds, Dr Spurrier did confirm that they were not linked to any of the confirmed cases in the Barossa Valley.

“I am appealing to people … to do the right thing because unfortunately we will be seeing more intensive care admissions,” Dr Spurrier told The Advertiser.

The news follows the Federal Government’s announcement of further social distancing measure to try and stem the spread of the COVID-19 virus throughout the community.
