South Australians could soon be permitted to use payment plan providers, like Afterpay, to pay off their outstanding fines.
Systems like Afterpay are being looked at to replace the state’s current fines system in a huge overhaul.
However, concerns have been raised by welfare groups who say that payment plans like Afterpay could trap the state’s most vulnerable in dangerous debt.
Those in favour of the change argue that payment plans offered by third parties could give South Australians a cheaper option to repay outstanding fines.
Tender documents describe the current system in-use at the end of its life and “difficult to support.”
Fines that could be paid under the system could be for offences associated with traffic, some drugs, firearms, licensing and public transport.
